Newcastle are preparing to make a €10m offer to sign central defender Koray Gunter in the January transfer window.
According to Calcio Mercato, via Sport Witness, Newcastle are interested in a deal for Gunter, who is currently on loan to Hellas Verona from Genoa.
The report claims that Verona can sign Gunter permanently for €5m in January, with Newcastle exploring the possibility of then signing him from Verona to double their profit on the defender.

Is he needed at St. James’ Park?

No. Newcastle are well stocked in the centre-back department and it would be an odd move to see him join the club in the January window.
Newcastle have only scored four goals in six games, which suggests that they need to be looking to add to their attacking ranks, rather than adding further to their defence. Steve Bruce already has Jamaal Lascelles, Paul Dummett, Fabian Schar, Federico Fernandez and Florian Lejeune in the centre-back positions, with no immediate need for Gunter to come in.
Bruce would be better off leaving his defence alone in January and, instead, targetting attackers to help add more goals to his side. Joelinton has scored once in six games so far this season and Miguel Almiron is yet to register a goal or assist since signing for the club last January.
