Newcastle target Lopes to cost up to €30m – is he worth it?

Newcastle transfer target Rony Lopes could cost a fee in the region of €30m in the January transfer window.

According to L’Equipe, via The Chronicle, Newcastle, Everton and West Ham are all interested in the midfielder.

The report claims that Sevilla are ready to let the former Manchester City player leave in January for a fee between €25m and €30m.

Is he worth €30m?

No. He has only managed more than four league goals in a season once in his career so far, which was when he notched 15 times in 38 games for Monaco during the 2017/18 campaign.

Lopes failed to make the grade at Manchester City, had three seasons at Lille and two seasons at Monaco – hardly settling the world alight, before signing for Sevilla over the summer.

He has played 11 minutes of La Liga action and was left out of their squad to face Real Madrid last weekend, suggesting that the manager does not think he is good enough for the team.

So, why should Newcastle spend €30m on him? The club have already spent big on Miguel Almiron and Joelinton, who are yet to justify their price tags – combining for one goal and zero assists for Newcastle so far.

Newcastle should avoid a big-money deal for Lopes and look elsewhere to find more value for money as they look to avoid relegation to the Championship next summer.
