Newcastle winger Christian Atsu has publicly apologised for his error leading to Liverpool’s second goal at Anfield on Saturday.
Atsu attempted a Cruyff turn in the middle of the park and was dispossessed, with Sadio Mane then scoring from Liverpool’s attack, putting them 2-1 up on the day.
Speaking to The Chronicle, Atsu said this:
It was unfortunate that I gave the ball away. The second goal was very crucial in this game. I can only apologise to the players and also the fans.
They’re a top team. We knew that. Against these teams, when you make a mistake, you’re going to get punished. They scored from our mistakes, and we have to take the positives out of this and focus on the next game.

Should Atsu be dropped after his poor performance at Anfield?
No. Atsu is Newcastle’s only available senior winger due to Allan Saint-Maximin’s injury and will be crucial against Brighton in getting the side up the pitch and creating chances on the counter-attack.
Atsu just needs to learn from his error and pick and choose the best moments to try skills – not in central midfield against a side as good as Liverpool, for example.
There is no doubting that Atsu has ability on the ball, but he needs to start showing it on a consistent basis if he wants to nail down his place in the side under Steve Bruce.
