Newcastle are monitoring Sevilla midfielder Rony Lopes ahead of a potential January swoop in the next transfer window.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle are “continually” tracking Lopes, as Steve Bruce looks to add more depth to his squad in the wide areas.

The report claims that Newcastle scouts have been to watch him over 10 times as they weigh up an approach.

Is Lopes a better option than Hull’s Jarrod Bowen?

Newcastle have been heavily linked with Bowen in recent weeks, after missing out on the winger in the summer.

Lopes joined Sevilla in the summer after managing just two goals in Ligue 1 for Monaco in the 2018/19 campaign, whilst Bowen netted 22 times in the Championship and has already bagged four in seven so far this season.

Bowen is also a year younger than Lopes, which means that he could offer a little more than the former Manchester City man in the long-term.

However, the report does not claim how much Lopes would cost or whether he could be available on loan – which would have an impact on comparisons of the two potential deals, with Hull wanting £20m for Bowen.

If they are both available for a similar price, Bowen appears to be the better option when you consider his goalscoring record and his experience in England – with Lopes playing just five times in England whilst with Manchester City.
