Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Marco Fabian has claimed that Jetro Willems left the German side as he wanted a move to a bigger club.
Fabian says that Willems spoke of his desire to leave whilst at Frankfurt, and says that the defender has a lot of potential to impress in the Premier League.
As quoted by The Chronicle, Fabian said this:
Every time he wanted more so when he went to Eintracht, the first year was not the best year for him but after he started playing a lot and he showed his skills. He showed how he played, and everyone loved him.
Afterwards, he started talking like before. He wanted more – ‘I want to go to a bigger club’ – and I think he has a good future. Right now, he is at a big club like Newcastle, and I think he wanted more for that reason. He worked a lot, and I think he can show how he can play for sure.

Whilst Newcastle may be a bigger club than Frankfurt in terms of their history, the German side are inarguably the better footballing side at the moment – having reached the semi-finals of the Europa League last season.
Willems often found himself behind Filip Kostic in the pecking order at Frankfurt, which may have been more of a determining factor in his decision to leave the club compared to wanting to join a “bigger club”.
Regardless of why he opted to sign for Newcastle, the defender has impressed in the last couple of games. His forward runs down the left have caused a lot of problems and he notched an assist for Yoshi Muto in Newcastle’s cup loss to Leicester.
