Former Newcastle striker Michael Owen has taken to Twitter again to defend himself following the outrage surrounding his latest book.
He claimed that he never wanted to sign for Newcastle and would rather have returned to Liverpool from Real Madrid.
Speaking on Twitter, @themichaelowen said this: “And nobody should be ashamed of that. Having drive and determination to better yourself is a good thing. In any other profession, it’s applauded. But in football it’s regarded as being ‘disloyal’”
These Newcastle fans reacted to his comments…
@BenMcCarthy76 said: “120k/week. Disgusting.”
@TackJemple7 said: “Backtracking…”

Toon fan @Jonesio80 said: “If you leave in the right way fans will always respect you.”
@SkyWalkerno10 said: “Anything to sell a book.”

You can argue points from both sides for this one. Whilst fans obviously want to see their players care about the club and show loyalty, the player has no obligation to do so.
There is no part of a player’s contract which states that he must stay loyal and never leave. Transfers are part and parcel of football and it is very rare to see a player stay at one club for their entire career.
However, Owen’s comments about never wanting to sign for Newcastle in the first place were, perhaps, ill-considered due to the backlash he has received from it.
