Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has admitted that Rafa Benitez was loved at the club and it was always going to be difficult for Steve Bruce to come in.
Dubravaka has, however, said that Bruce is striving to motivate the players every day to improve them. Newcastle have picked up four points in four Premier League matches under Bruce so far.
Speaking to Pravda, via Sport Witness, Dubravka said this:
It is important to me that my position has not changed. I’m continuing (to play) and I’m happy about it.
It would be difficult for any coach coming after Benitez because he has a name. People loved him there. Bruce was given the opportunity. It is challenging and he strives to motivate us very much in both matches and training.

Given Dubravka’s comments, it is clear to see that Benitez was held in high regard by the players at Newcastle and his departure was always going to result in an adaptation period for the club.
Bruce’s first two games were a sign of this, losing 1-0 to Arsenal and 3-1 to newly-promoted Norwich. However, Newcastle are unbeaten in their last two league games, beating Tottenham 1-0 and drawing 1-1 with Watford at St. James’ Park.
It is still far too early to make any definitive judgements on Bruce’s reign at Newcastle, with the former Sunderland man still settling in on Tyneside and getting the squad used to playing his style.
