Does Shelvey deserve a new contract?

As harsh as it may sound, no he does not. At the moment, he does not get into Newcastle’s best XI, with Isaac Hayden and Sean Longstaff currently ahead of him in the pecking order for the two central midfield roles.

When he does play, he does not offer enough with or without the ball to warrant his inclusion on a regular basis – despite the occasional moment of magic in possession.

Newcastle are scraping at the bottom of the table and need grafters in midfield who will put a shift in and work hard for the team defensively, which is something Shelvey has struggled to do during his time at Newcastle so far.

Until he is able to prove that he can add that to his game, the club should not hand him a fresh contract.
