Newcastle are thought to be considering a surprise move for former Liverpool and Tottenham defender Steven Caulker.
That’s according to the Daily Mirror, who suggest that Steve Bruce, who is a long-term admirer of the defender, has made enquiries for the player, who is currently on the books at Turkish side Alanyaspor.

The report goes on to add that Caulker would be available for around £2 million, with Fenerbahce also plotting a move for the towering centre-back in six months time.

A move for Caulker would certainly divide opinion amongst Newcastle supporters, and, in my opinion, is one that the club shouldn’t go through with.
Despite rebuilding his career in Turkey with some impressive performances, the 27-year-old has struggled during his time in English football.
Caulker has represented a plethora of clubs after breaking through at Tottenham, failing to nail down permanent starting spots at Cardiff and QPR.
The Englishman spent bizarre brief loan spells at Southampton and Liverpool in 2016 before joining Dundee two years later, and would more than likely struggle to adapt to life back in one of the most demanding leagues in the world.
The Magpies currently have Ciaran Clark, Federico Fernandez, Jamaal Lascelles, Florian Lejeune and Fabian Schar, so aren’t exactly short of senior centre-back options.
A move for Caulker would be seen as a major step backwards after a relatively successful window so far, however, it appears as if Bruce could well firm up his interest in the defender before the deadline closes.
