Newcastle have been linked with a shock move to re-sign Andy Carroll in recent days on a potential free transfer.
The 30-year-old, who was released by West Ham earlier in the summer, spent five professional years at St James’ Park before leaving for Liverpool in 2011.
The Mirror report that the Magpies have stopped their hunt for a striker, with Steve Bruce keen on keeping hold of Dwight Gayle.
However, this hasn’t stopped some Newcastle supporters urging the club to bring the towering striker back home.

It appears as if, although some Newcastle fans are keen on bringing the player back to Tyneside, many are also worried about a potential deal.
Carroll featured just 14 times last season under Manuel Pellegrini, scoring once in the FA Cup, and was regularly ruled out through injury.
The success of a move back home would depend on whether or not the former England international can stay fully fit for the entire campaign. If he can, he could well prove to be a useful addition as an impact sub with his aerial prowess and hold up play throughout the season.
However, if Carroll is still suffering slight niggles, all emotional connections should be put to one side and a move should be knocked on the head.
It remains to be seen as to whether or not the club will be tempted into offering the player a contract, with Bruce having just over two days to finalise anymore summer business.
