Newcastle have reportedly made an enquiry about a potential deal to re-sign defender James Tavernier from Rangers – but should the club step up their interest?
According to a report from 90min, Steve Bruce’s men are among the Premier League sides to express an interest, with newly-promoted Aston Villa also making an enquiry, while Brighton are said to be preparing a bid.
Re-signing Tavernier at the right price would certainly be a sensible move from Newcastle.
His ability to provide a goal threat in the final third is second to none. In all competitions last season, he scored 17 goals and managed 20 assists. While he may have been Rangers’ designated penalty taker, the numbers are quite staggering for a defensive player.
With the physical presence of Joelinton leading the line, Tavernier’s supply from set-pieces could make Newcastle a very dangerous outfit, while also taking some of the creative pressure off the likes of Matt Ritchie and Miguel Almiron next season.
