Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck is the latest name to be linked with a summer move to Newcastle United, but would he be a useful signing for Rafa Benitez?
Football Insider claims that Newcastle are hoping to land the player on a free transfer, with his contract at Arenal expiring in the summer.
Given that he is available for nothing, it is easy to see the attraction from a Newcastle point of view. Rafa Benitez is set to be working with small budgets once again this summer and on his day, there are not many better players that than Welbeck that will be available for nothing.
The big red flag for Newcastle is the player’s injury record. While there’s no fee involved, the England international is a player that can command a decent wage, so they’ll be wary of committing huge money to a player that has spent so long on the sidelines.
It may well be a risk worth taking, Welbeck would certainly improve Newcastle’s attacking options, with plenty of international and European experience under his belt.
If they can get certain guarantees over his fitness, Welbeck could be a very shrewd piece of business from Newcastle this summer.
