Newcastle suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Arsenal in the Premier League on Monday night as Rafael Benitez’s torrid record at the Emirates continues, with the Magpies boss still yet to record a victory on his travels to the stadium.
Aaron Ramsey gave Arsenal a deserved lead 15 minutes before the break, in a first half that also saw the Welshman have a goal disallowed.
Newcastle offered very little in the way of going forwards as they set up in an attempt to frustrate Arsenal, but with 10 minutes remaining it looked as though Benitez’s side could snatch an unlikely draw with the score still at 1-0.
Substitute Ki Sung-Yueng had an effort from range as Newcastle began to push forwards slightly, however the Magpies defence fell apart just moment later as Arsenal doubled their lead.
Alexandre Lacazette, who was bright throughout, drifted away from his marker to play a lofted one-two with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Jamaal Lascelles failed to deal with the Frenchman’s run and allowed Lacazette to lob the onrushing Martin Dubravka.
Newcastle remain seven points clear of the relegation zone following the defeat, and here’s how we rated the Magpies against Arsenal.
Martin Dubravka - 4
Was fortunate his error from a corner was ruled out for an alleged foul from Lacazette, in what would have been Arsenal’s third goal.
Deandre Yedlin - 5
Was unfortunate in the build up to Ramsey’s goal as the ball ricocheted off of his shin into the Welshman’s path.
Florian Lejeune - 4
Struggled to cope with the pace of Arsenal’s build up play.
Jamaal Lascelles - 3
Awful defending between the Newcastle skipper and Paul Dummett allowed Lacazette and Aubameyang to combine and Lascelles failed to track the Frenchman who finished with aplomb for Arsenal’s second.
Paul Dummett - 4
Struggled throughout and allowed Lacazette to drift off him too easily for the Gunners’ second
Matt Ritchie - 5
The Scot produced a fabulous goal-line clearance to prevent Arsenal from going 2-0 up in the first half.
Ayoze Perez - 4
A very quiet performance from Perez who offered very little in the way of support for Rondon.
Isaac Hayden - 4
Was slightly overrun in midfield and he was substituted as Benitez looked to introduce a bit more creativity.
Mohamed Diame - 5
Started the game brightly but he struggled to cope with the creativity of Mesut Ozil.
Miguel Almiron - 4
Similarly to Perez, Almiron offered very little in the way of support for Rondon.
Salomon Rondon - 5
Battled well as usual but as previously mentioned, had very little support.
