Newcastle United were dealt a crushing late blow as Wolverhampton Wanderers came away from St James’ Park with a 2-1 victory.
The Magpies headed into this fixture on the back of a score draw away at Everton on Wednesday evening. Wolves, meanwhile, were full of confidence following a 2-1 win against Chelsea at home in midweek.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s men took the lead in the first half courtesy of Diogo Jota. However, the hosts bounced back soon after as Ayoze Perez netted an equaliser.
It was a closely-contested affair throughout but Wolves sensed an opportunity to secure a win as DeAndre Yedlin was sent off for Newcastle just before the hour mark.
Eventually, the visitors’ persistence paid off as Matt Doherty found space to nod home a rebound in the fourth minute of stoppage time at the end of the match.
Here are our Newcastle player ratings following the disappointing late defeat to Wolves.
Martin Dubravka - 6
Had a solid game but will be aggrieved by Wolves’ second.
DeAndre Yedlin - 5
Received a red card as he pulled Jota back in a dangerous position.
Jamaal Lascelles - 6
Lascelles was solid at the back but never looked truly convincing.
Federico Fernandez - 8
Fernandez shone in central defence before he was withdrawn.
Ciaran Clark - 7
Turned in an assured display and looked confident throughout.
Matt Ritchie - 6
Was forced to alter his position following Yedlin’s dismissal. An adequate performance.
Ki Sung-yueng - 7
Pulled the strings in midfield but was unable to play penetrative passes.
Mohamed Diame - 6
Diame was solid enough but had little to no influence on proceedings.
Christian Atsu - 7
Didn’t always use the ball well but was always threatening with his energy and drive.
Ayoze Perez - 7
Took his goal confidently and worked hard.
Salomon Rondon - 8
Worked relentlessly and always looked like Newcastle’s biggest threat. He was a standout performer.
Javi Manquillo – 5: Introduced in place of Fernandez. Did little to convince, once again.
Joselu – 5: Came on with little time to make an impact.
