Newcastle United players are said to be worried about the prospect of Mike Ashley not providing the funds for Rafa Benitez to strengthen in January.
That’s according to former Newcastle player Tommy Cassidy, who told LoveSport Radio that members of the playing staff have expressed their concern to him personally as the January window approaches.
I go over to the training ground now and again. Even the players of today know they need players in. It’s not very often in the past where players have attacked each other.
But some of the Newcastle players who play today have told me they need three or four players in, but they don’t think the chairman will pay the money for them. So that’s a negative which frightens me.
While Newcastle’s form has picked up recently, Benitez is expected to be very busy over the coming weeks as he looks to strengthen his squad for the second half of the season.
A deal to sign MLS playmaker Miguel Almiron has been mooted, but it now appears that he could arrive on loan with an option to buy at the end of the season amid fears that Newcastle will not shell out the necessary funds in January.
The Magpies are currently 14th in the Premier League, four points above the drop zone.
