Newcastle are reportedly keeping close tabs on SPAL defender Francesco Vicari, amid suggestions they could launch a move to sign the defender.
Reports in Italy have claimed that the Premier League side have sent scouts to watch over him as they shortlist a number of potential transfer targets.
Rafa Benitez is keen to strengthen in January but knows he will have to scour the European market far and wide to find potential bargains, with the Newcastle boss likely to have limited funds available to him once again.
Vicari has impressed for SPAL this season and his performances are clearly not going unnoticed by some in the Premier League.
The defence has been a weak point for the Magpies this season, with Florian Lejeune suffering a long-term injury earlier in the campaign.
Newcastle, despite sitting bottom of the Premier League, have not conceded bucketloads this season but it appears Benitez is still looking to strengthen at the back.
