# Potential Newcastle takeover bid relies on their Premier League status

A potential bid from a group of US-based investors to buy Newcastle United is likely to depend on their Premier League status.

[The Daily Mail reports](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-6283825/Group-seriously-wealthy-businessmen-weigh-Newcastle-takeover.html) that a US group are planning a bid to buy the club from Mike Ashley, but it is unlikely to materialise if they are relegated from the Premier League.

The report claims that the group can match the asking price that Ashley is demanding to walk away from the club.

Ashley has made the club available for purchase and has reportedly been looking for around £300 million in order to sell.

It has been well documented that ex-Chelsea chief Peter Kenyon is considered a move to buy the club, but this latest claim is believed to be involving a rival group.

Newcastle are now facing a similar situation to what occurred last season when Amanda Staveley tried to launch a bid to buy the club. The same bid was believed to be hinged on the prospect of staying in the Premier League.

The Magpies are currently 19th in the league after a poor start to the new season.
