Rafael Benitez is ‘happy’ on Tyneside, despite rumours over the summer he was discontented with the club’s owner Mike Ashley.
Efforts have been made to get the Spaniard tied down to a long-term contract, but Benitez is still reluctant to sign it given concerns he has over monetary support, the academy, and the club’s scouting network.
When grilled on his future at the club, Benitez said (quoted by Chronicle Live):
What I will say about the North East and Newcastle is you can live your life and you can enjoy your football.
The people love the club and love the team, especially if you are giving everything.
That is the perfect scenario for a manager.
So I am quite relaxed because I am happy here.
Whilst the situation may not yet be resolved, Benitez’s comments may go some way to easing the fears of Magpies fans who had been concerned Ashley’s conduct may cause their boss to walk out over the summer.
