# Marlon to join Newcastle on loan

Newcastle United look set to sign Barcelona defender Marlon Santos on a season-long loan, beating Southampton and West Ham to the defender.

[According to Sport](https://www.sport.es/es/noticias/barca/marlon-punto-irse-cedido-newcastle-6981364), the player will join the club pending an approval of a work permit.

Newcastle are set to pay Barcelona a €2 million fee to secure a deal for the defender who has been widely expected to leave the club this summer.

Both Southampton and West Ham were heavily linked with the Brazilian earlier in the transfer window, but a deal never materialised.

A permanent deal in the region of €12 million was being discussed, but Barcelona now look set to loan the player once again.

Marlon had been on loan at Nice last season, as part of a two-year loan deal with the French side.

The La Liga champions cut that deal short halfway through in order to cash in on the player, however, that no longer appears to be the case.
