Newcastle’s move for Marlon Santos has collapsed after the Magpies failed to obtain a work permit for the Brazilian.

The Magpies have instead moved to bring in Federico Fernandez from Swansea for a medical, whilst negotiations continue between the two clubs regarding a move.

A rumoured £6 million move for Fernandez has led to Newcastle icing the move for Santos.

Santos had signed for Barcelona in the summer of 2017 and spent the following season on loan at Nice.

The central defender made 23 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit, but manager Patrick Vieira decided not to exercise a €20 million option inserted into the loan deal.

Beginning his career at Fluminense, Santos moved to Spain in 2016 to join Barcelona.

Despite a long list of deadline day disappointments for Newcastle fans, the signing of Fernandez will go a long way to assuring Magpies fans that the new season may be a fruitful one.
