Newcastle will have one more obstacle to contend with if they are to secure the signing of Salomon Rondon this summer.
The West Brom striker had been linked with a move to St James’ Park as part of a swap deal with Dwight Gayle, but it is understood that deal is one unlikely to materialise.

Known to be much-fancied by manager Rafael Benitez, any outright purchase of the Venezuelan would now command a higher fee than previously, as the release clause built into Rondon’s contract has expired.
The forward had been available for £16.5 million following the Baggies’ relegation to the Championship, but according to the Express and Star, the time period for which Rondon was available at that price has lapsed.
With summer acquisitions few and far between for the Magpies to this point, the news that one identified target might be worth more than first thought will be unwelcome on Tyneside.
