Newcastle United have confirmed that Swiss international Fabian Schar has joined the club on a three-year contract.
As reported on the club’s official website, Schar signs an initial three-year from Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna.
Newcastle are believed to have activated the player’s release clause, which was in the region of £3.5 million.
The 26-year-old becomes Newcastle’s fourth summer signing, with Japanese striker Yoshinori Muto expected to follow him through the doors imminently.
The Magpies have agreed a £9.5 million fee with Mainz for the striker, who has previously been linked with West Ham.
Schar joins with a wealth of experience under his belt. He was part of the Switzerland squad to reach the last 16 of the World Cup in Russia this summer.
He has previously had stints in Germany with Hoffenheim and with Basel in his native Switzerland.
After being confirmed as Newcastle’s latest summer signing, the defender spoke of his excitement about moving to the Premier League.
I’m really happy to be here. The club is a really big club for me. It has a big name, and it is a brilliant chance for me.
I’m not like a typical defender. I, of course, defend, but I’m quite good with the ball – I like to play, I want to build up the game from behind, and I think that is a strength of mine. I have also scored some headers – that could also be a strength and hopefully I can use it here.
