The 27-year-old, who has agreed a three-year deal with Rennes, has attracted Premier League interest for some time.

Newcastle had been interested in him during their previous stint in the top flight, while Arsenal were also said to be admirers earlier in his career.

The former French international will be hoping to get his career back on track after coming through the ranks at Lyon.

A lot was expected of the midfielder, who Newcastle had earmarked as a potential replacement for Mikel Merino, from a young age but injuries have seen the player struggle in recent seasons.
