# Newcastle enter the running to sign Brazilian midfielder

Newcastle United are interested in a deal to sign Thiago Mendes from Lille, but face competition from Premier League rivals, West Ham, Huddersfield and Crystal Palace.

As per a report from [The Times](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/football-shorts-west-hams-spending-spree-continues-and-wilfried-zaha-stars-for-crystal-palace-q70fkmpwn), all four Premier League sides are considering a move for the player, but West Ham are leading the way after enquiring about a deal for the 26-year-old.

The midfielder is valued at close to £18 million with Manuel Pellegrini looking to continue his summer transfer business.

A host of Lille players have been linked with moves away from the club this summer after their struggles both on and off the pitch last season.

Mendes is also attracting interest from elsewhere in Europe, with both Lazio and Wolfsburg keen to snap up the midfielder.

It has been well documented that Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is keen to add to his squad, but it is yet to be seen if he will have the necessary funds to compete for Mendes.
