Newcastle have joined Watford in the race to sign Bruno Varela from Benfica this summer.

According to Record, as translated by Sport Witness, the two Premier League sides are keen to sign the player, who is expected to leave Benfica.

Watford are in the market for a replacement for the ageing Heurelho Gomes, who turned 37 in February.

The report claims that Varela is one of Newcastle’s key targets, alongside striker Nicolai Jorgensen, who was heavily linked with a switch to St James’ Park during the January window.

Newcastle recently completed the permanent signing of Martin Dúbravka after a successful loan spell at the club, but Varela could be seen as one for the future.

Varela was a regular for Benfica last season, making 29 appearances in the league, but despite that, the report suggests that the player is expected to be playing in the Premier League sooner rather than later.
