# Pundit makes shock claim that Newcastle star is England’s best in his position

Former Liverpool player-turned pundit Danny Murphy believes Newcastle’s Jonjo Shelvey is England’s best midfielder.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, as reported by the [Daily Star](https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/694692/Newcastle-United-news-Jonjo-Shelvey-England-call-up-best-midfielder-Danny-Murphy-video?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+daily-star-football+%28Daily+Star+%3A%3A+Football+Feed%29), Murphy believes that Gareth Southgate should be considering the player for his World Cup squad.

> I think, purely based on footballing ability, and in the central midfield area of English talent, he is our best passer of the ball by a long, long way.

The former Liverpool and Swansea midfielder has been an influential member of the Newcastle squad, both in the Championship and Premier League.

Shelvey has become known for his impeccable passing range, but has often been let down by his poor discipline record this season.

The midfielder has six caps for England but was not called up to either of the final two warm-up games against the Netherlands or Italy, making a place in the squad unlikely.

He has not featured for the Three Lions since an impressive performance against San Marino in 2016. He was named as Man of the Match during an emphatic victory for England.
