Matt Ritchie fired home his first goal of the season, to send Newcastle to a vital 1-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday.

Ritchie found himself unmarked in the penalty area following Jonjo Shelvey’s free-kick, and he arrowed the ball into the bottom right corner past David De Gea.

Newcastle dominated the early exchanges; Jonjo Shelvey had the most promising opportunity when he forced De Gea to palm away his hard-driven strike, five minutes in.

Manchester United’s first shot came after half-an-hour, debutant Martin Dubravka did well to turn away Jesse Lingard’s near-post effort.

Dubravka was called into action again only moments later; the Newcastle goalkeeper stuck out a left leg to deny Anthony Martial one-on-one.

United’s chances continued early into the second half; Alexis Sanchez should have scored after rounding Dubravka, but Florian Lejeune did well to rush back and block.

But it was Newcastle who broke the deadlock, Shelvey’s whipped free-kick was headed by Florian Lejeune and then flicked on by Dwight Gayle, meaning Ritchie just had to fire home.

Newcastle were then forced back to hang onto their narrow lead. Dubravka continued his positive contributions, and had to be strong to push away Ashley Young’s effort 67 minutes in.

But when Dubravka seemed to be beaten 10 minutes later, Dwight Gayle was on hand to clear the ball off the line twice following a corner.

And in the final seconds of the game, the Newcastle goalkeeper made a wonderful reaction save to deny Michael Carrick from close range.

The result lifts Newcastle out of the relegation zone and up to 13th place in the Premier League.
