Newcastle attempted to sign Brazilian star on Deadline Day

Rumours of Newcastle being interested in Gremio forward Luan never really gathered any pace in the January transfer window, and according to the player, there was no formal contact between Newcastle and his agent.

However, according to news outlet UOL, negotiations did actually take place.

It is understood that Newcastle approached the Brazilian towards the end of the window, with the possibility of a deal falling short as personal terms could not be agreed.

UOL reported that the Magpies offered the striker a loan deal, with an option to buy when the season comes to an end, but there was a disagreement in the contract, which is yet to be revealed and given the financial power and advantage the Premier League has over the Brazilian Serie A, it is unlikely to be Newcastle because could not afford to meet the 24-year-old’s wage demands.

Newcastle were busy on deadline day, offloading Aarons, Colback and Mitrovic and bringing in goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on and Leicester striker Islam Slimani on loan.

Luan would have been a huge addition for Newcastle but he becomes another player on the list of those star players who the club missed out on.
