# Newcastle prepared to pay club-record sum for Slimani

According to a report from the [Mirror](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/newcastle-ready-break-transfer-record-11902925), Newcastle United are prepared to splash a club-record fee to sign Islam Slimani from Leicester City this month.

The Magpies have been struggling this season and have failed to convince in front of goal. Rafa Benitez has been keen to recruit added attacking inspiration since the summer and it seems Slimani has been identified as a primary target for the Spaniard.

Newcastle recruited Kenedy on loan from Chelsea until the end of the season on Tuesday and they are clearly on the lookout for added reinforcements, with Slimani said to be one man who is being considered.

Leicester paid around £28m to Sporting CP for Slimani but the Algerian international has flattered to deceive. He is out of favour under Claude Puel at the King Power Stadium and a move away could be on the cards in the remainder of the window.

Funds are limited at St James’ Park but the Mirror claim that Benitez is willing to spend a club-record fee on bringing Slimani to the club, with him desperate to sign a new striker.

Leicester are stated to be keen on receiving £20m at least from Slimani’s sale, a price more expensive than the £16m Newcastle paid for Michael Owen approximately 12 years ago.
