# Ashley gives Bentiez green light to sign Kevin Gameiro

Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has been given the green light to sign Atletico Madrid striker Kevin Gameiro.

[The Express](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/908391/Newcastle-transfer-news-Atletico-Madrid-news-Kevin-Gameiro-Rafa-Benitez) reports that owner Mike Ashley has approved Benitez’s wishes to splash the cash in order to keep the Magpies in the Premier League this season.

Newcastle have struggled for goals in this campaign and Gameiro has been deemed surplus to requirements in Madrid.

The French forward, who has scored six times in all competitions this season, is valued at close to £16 million.

Ashley has been reluctant to spend this month in the hope that a takeover could be completed, however, that no longer looks imminent.

Gameiro has fallen further down the pecking order at the Wanda Metropolitano due to the arrival of Diego Costa, who is now able to play in La Liga following the club’s transfer ban.

Swansea have also registered an interest in the player this month. The former Paris Saint-Germain forward has made just seven starts in La Liga this season.
