Newcastle to fight Burnley for Las Palmas’s Jonathan Viera

Newcastle United and Burnley are both interested in signing Las Palmas’ Spanish midfielder Jonathan Viera, according to The Telegraph.

The midfielder has become available for other clubs this January transfer window by Las Palmas for just shy of £18 million.

It is also reported that a number of Premier League clubs are fighting for the 28-year-old, but Newcastle United and Burnley are looking the most likely to capture his signature.

Last season he was in superb form, scoring seven goals and making as many assists, in central attacking midfield or on the left wing, playing a crucial role in Las Palmas’ 11th-placed finish.

However, they are not doing as well this season, hitting rock bottom of the La Liga table, four points from safety and having conceded the most goals in the league.

Viera has, however, been ever-present for Las Palmas this campaign and his impressive performances, despite the team’s bad results earned him a call-up up to the Spain squad.

He got his first full Spain cap in their 1-0 World Cup Qualifying win in Israel in October, playing 90 minutes for La Furia Roja.

His current contract at his boyhood club runs out in the summer of 2020, but with the club looking to cash in on the fans’ favourite, he may be on his way to Tyneside.
