# Benitez doesn’t expect huge January funds

Despite Newcastle owner Mike Ashley announcing that he wants to sell the club, manager Rafa Benitez doesn’t expect to be a big spender in January – even if a new owner comes in.

Ashely, who bought the Magpies in 2007, formerly announced last month that he wanted to bring his time with the North East club to an end, and that he was seeking an exit before Christmas. Now, with the January transfer window not far off, it has been suggested that Benitez could be set to be given a substantial transfer kitty, especially should Amanda Staveley’s PCP Captial Partners succeed in its bid to take over.

Benitez however was keen to downplay those thoughts, expressing that January is a notoriously difficult window to operate in. Speaking ahead of his side’s weekend fixture against Watford, he said;

> It still doesn’t change too much, so you have to look for good players and if they’re available and in January that’s difficult.

> The last thing you ask about is the price. If we have a change in ownership, we don’t know if we will have money or not, because the Financial Fair Play rules. They don’t allow you to spend too much money.

> We’re just looking for good players – better players than we already have – or to fix positions we need to fix.

> We’re not thinking about how much (money to spend). We have an idea if this player could be cheaper or could be more expensive, but we don’t know, so we have to concentrate on what we can do and that’s preparing the side.

Newcaslte currently sit in 11th place in the Premier League table, and will look to end a run of three consecutive league losses when they host the Hornets at St. James’ Park on Saturday.
