# Benitez to be given £500m if takeover goes through

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez could be given £500 million to spend over the next two transfer windows if the proposed takeover goes through.

The [Sunday Express](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/869439/Newcastle-takeover-Rafa-Benitez) report that Amanda Staveley wants Benitez to turn Newcastle into title contenders and could splash the cash to do so.

Staveley has begun due diligence checks on the club’s book as Mike Ashley continues his attempts to sell Newcastle.

Benitez’s struggles in the transfer market have been well documented after his strained relationship with Ashley.

The former Real Madrid manager had limited funds available to him following Newcastle’s promotion from the Championship, which saw the Magpies miss out on several key targets.

The report suggests that Newcastle could look to re-sign Andros Townsend, who has been a long-term target for Benitez after he was sold following the club’s relegation to the Premier League.

Despite the lack of money spent over the summer, Newcastle have enjoyed a successful return to the top flight, winning four and drawing two of their opening nine games of the season.
