# Lascelles close to penning new deal

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has delivered a positive update on the contract negotiations with Jamaal Lascelles.

The Magpies are determined to tie down their captain to an improved and extended deal with the club, and it looks as though they are making good progress in their hopes of doing so.

As quoted by the [Newcastle Chronicle](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/newcastle-boss-rafa-benitez-good-13684674), Benitez admitted that Lascelles is “very close” to putting pen to paper on a new contract at St James’ Park.

> It’s closer than last week. Don’t worry, it’s very close.

Lascelles has been a pivotal player for the Magpies since joining from Nottingham Forest. The central defender has played a big part in Newcastle’s positive start to the season, and has already netted on two occasions.

This has led to him having been rewarded with a new contract offer, and it will come as music to Newcastle fans’ ears that he is poised to commit his long-term future to the club in what appears to be the imminent future.
