Newcastle Player Ratings: Tottenham (H)

Newcastle could not get their Premier League campaign off to a winning start this afternoon, as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Magpies headed into the game as underdogs and managed to stifle Spurs’ attacking threat for the majority of the match. Chances came at a premium and both sides defended resolutely in large parts.

However, the turning point of the match came just after the start of the second-half. Jonjo Shelvey experienced a moment of madness and stamped on Dele Alli’s ankle before the eyes of referee Andre Marriner, resulting in him receiving his marching orders.

The tide turned after Newcastle were reduced to ten men, and it was Alli who broke the deadlock with a well-timed finish beneath Rob Elliot.

Spurs doubled their advantage with 20 minutes to spare, as Ben Davies connected with a loose ball in the box to seal the game at 2-0.

It was an unfortunate defeat for Newcastle, and one that highlighted their need to recruit wisely in the remainder of the transfer window. Here are our match ratings from the loss.
