Newcastle United get their Premier League campaign underway on Sunday against Tottenham at St James’ Park.
It’s bound to be an exciting day for all of those involved in the club, who returned to the top flight at the first time of asking.
There are a number of new faces at the club after a busy summer of transfers, despite claims that the Spanish boss is unhappy with the lack of deals.
The Magpies now face one of the league’s sternest tests on the opening day against last season’s runners-up, Tottenham.
Despite not signing a single player this summer Spurs still boast one of the strongest starting XIs in the league.
With that in mind, we’ve identified some key battles that may decide where the game will be won and lost on Sunday.
Lejeune vs Kane
A summer signing from Spanish side Eibar, Florian Lejeune will face one of the Premier League’s most potent strikers on the opening day of the season.
Kane bagged 29 league goals for Spurs last season and will be desperate to get off to a good start on Sunday.
Alli vs Hayden
Isaac Hayden played a key role in Newcastle’s promotion out of the Championship last season and is likely to be rewarded with a start on the opening day of the new Premier League campaign.
Borussia Dortmund youngster Mikel Moreno, who’s joined the club on loan is unlikely to be fit in time to feature.
Hayden could be one of the players tasked with containing Dele Ali in the middle of the park.
The England international enjoyed a sensational campaign last season and cutting off the feed to Kane will be key to Newcastle’s chances of coming away from the game with anything.
Manquillo vs Eriksen
Christian Eriksen was key to Spurs’ success last season and he’ll be looking to get the better of Javier Manquillo on the opening day.
The Spanish full-back showed glimpses of his ability last season on loan at Sunderland but was never truly able to settle at the club.
Gayle vs Alderweireld
Striker Dwight Gayle will be desperate to continue his rich vein of form in the top flight this season.
Doubted by many that the forward can produce at the top level, Gayle dropped into the Championship and fired the Magpies to promotion.
Benitez appears to have kept his faith in the forward this season and early goal will do his confidence the world of good.
It may not be that easy though, Tottenham conceded the fewest goals (26) out of any team last season, three less than Manchester United and seven less than champions Chelsea.
