Middlesbrough step up Darlow pursuit

Middlesbrough have stepped up their pursuit of Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

According to the Northern Echo, Middlesbrough boss Gary Monk has made Darlow his number one target – in terms of goalkeepers – for the summer.

The Championship outfit are looking for a new shot-stopper following the departures of Victor Valdes and Brad Guzan at the end of last season.

The report claims that Sheffield Wednesday’s Kieren Westwood and Leeds’ Rob Green are also on Middlesbrough’s short list but Darlow is the frontrunner.

Newcastle are ready to let Darlow leave this summer as they search for a number one of their own in the transfer market.

This is despite Darlow helping Newcastle to win the Championship title last season, playing the majority of games between the sticks.

The 24-year-old is thought to be valued at £5m, with Reading previously interested.

Reading were unwilling to match his valuation but it appears as though Middlesbrough are ready to pay up.
