# Manquillo to undergo Newcastle medical

Newcastle United are edging ever closer to the signing of Atletico Madrid defender Javier Manquillo.

The 23-year-old was first linked with the Magpies today, and it looks as though a shock move truly is on the cards. According to a report from the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-4708102/Newcastle-sign-Javier-Manquillo-Atletico-Madrid.html), Newcastle are indeed closing in on his signature, and he will undergo a medical with the club in the near future.

It’s stated that the Spaniard has arrived at Newcastle’s pre-season training base today in Ireland, and will look to finalise the minor details of his move.

Manquillo spent last season on loan at Sunderland but struggled in what was a hugely unsuccessful campaign for the Black Cats.

However, he impressed during his time with Marseille and has featured for big clubs such as Liverpool and, of course, Atletico Madrid.

Manquillo will be keen to hit the ground running under his compatriot Rafa Benitez and will be vying for the right-back spot.
