Reading manager confirms Darlow interest

Reading manager Jaap Stam has confirmed that he is interested in signing Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

Reports earlier this week linked Reading with a £5m move for Darlow as they look to replace Ali Al-Habsi this summer.

Al-Habsi has told Reading that he wants to leave the club and has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia. He is thought to want to move closer to his family.

Newcastle want at least £5m for Darlow, who was their first choice for the majority of last season.

Speaking to the Reading Chronicle, Stam said this:

We have a list with eight possible goalies.

There is Darlow.

We have to look at if we can afford the fees and the wages.

It’s never going to be easy to bring in someone of the same or perhaps even better quality than Ali.

Matz Sells and Rob Elliot both had spells in goal but it was Darlow who held the gloves for the longest.

The young shot-stopper played 34 Championship matches as Newcastle clinched the title and were promoted to the Premier League.

However, it looks as though Darlow may be returning to the second tier with Reading, if Newcastle decide he is surplus to requirements.
