Newcastle snubbed by Caldirola

Reports from Sky Italia, as covered by Inside Futbol, claim that Newcastle have been rejected by Werder Bremen centre-back Luca Caldirola.

Caldirola spent most of the 2016/17 campaign sidelined with injury and only managed to notch up five Bundesliga appearances. The Italian defender looked poised to leave the German outfit at the end of the month when his current deal expires, which provoked speculation about where he’d be playing football next season.

However, it’s emerged that Caldirola is set to sign a new deal at the Bundesliga side until 2019, putting an end to links with the Magpies and other clubs such as newly-promoted Huddersfield.

It looks like Rafa Benitez will now have to hunt elsewhere for a new centre-back, as he looks to add depth to his squad for Newcastle’s return to the Premier League next season.

The Spanish boss will not be short of funds this summer – with reports claiming that he’s been gifted a huge transfer kitty for the window ahead.
