According to Portuguese newspaper Record, as reported by Sports Witness, Newcastle are in a tug-of-war with local rivals Sunderland to sign Benfica midfielder Andreas Samaris.
Benfica’s president Luis Felipe Vieira has stated that he’s certain he can get £20 million for the 27-year-old, which is double what the club paid Olympiacos just three years ago.
Samaris endured a fairly average season at the Liga NOS champions and failed to score a single goal throughout the campaign.

Sunderland were reportedly the first club to show interest in Samaris but it’s understood that they would have only been able to sanction the deal whilst in the Premier League. Now with Newcastle boasting a Premier League status, it looks as if the Magpies are front-runners to secure his services.
Newcastle were touted with Samaris’ signature back in January, could they finally a seal a deal to bring the midfielder to St James’ Park this summer?
