Sels given route out of Newcastle

Newcastle ‘keeper Matz Sels has been offered a way out of the club after falling down the pecking order for Rafa Benitez’s side.

The Belgian is the subject of interest from numerous sides in his homeland, and notably Anderlecht, who have reportedly confirmed their interest in the 25-year-old, the Chronicle claims.

Sels began the season at the Magpies as first-choice but has gradually been starved of game time, finishing the campaign with just nine league appearances.

It’s understandable that the shot-stopper will explore new options this summer, and at just 25 you’d expect him to be playing consistently as he was back in Belgium.

However, Anderlecht’s director of football Herman van Holsbeeck has suggested that completing a deal for Sels could be ‘complicated’, down to the wage that he’s currently on at St James’ Park.

The Chronicle also state that Anderlecht are in pole position to land the ‘keeper, with the attraction of Champions League football next season a huge factor.
