Newcastle plotting swoop for Dutch defender

Newcastle United are reportedly plotting a move to sign Sporting CP defender Marvin Zeegelaar this summer.

According to a report from the printed edition of Portuguese news outlet Record, as covered by Football Oranje today, the Magpies are considering a swoop to sign the Dutchman as they look to bolster their defensive options by adding Zeegelaar to their ranks.

It’s claimed that the left-back would cost a lowly fee of just €4m, which is a reasonable price to pay for Rafa Benitez’s side.

Zegelaar has played 26 times for Sporting CP this season and may very well be ready to test himself in one of Europe’s top leagues, with English clubs such as Norwich and Hull having previously been linked.

Newcastle appear to have shown interest in a plethora of Sporting players over the course of the last few months, with both William Carvalho and Ruben Semedo both linked heavily with a switch to St James’ Park.
