Lee Ryder of the Chronicle reports that the club are confident of completing a deal, with the former Manchester City man being brought into bolster the United defence.
Benitez is thought to be keen on signing the player as he goes about adding Premier League quality to his squad following their return to the top flight.
Lejeune is valued at around £8.7 million by the La Liga who only signed the player during the last summer transfer window.
The 26-year-old was ever present in what was a strong campaign from Eibar, who safely secured a mid-table finish in the Spanish top flight.
