# Newcastle have €14m bid for Ruben Semedo accepted

Newcastle have had a €14 million bid for Sporting defender Ruben Semedo accepted, according to Portuguese outfit, [O Jogo](https://t.co/P2TJyNaIFq) .

Semedo is being touted as one of the next best young players to come out of Portugal after an impressive campaign in the Primeira Liga.

Rafa Benitez had been linked with a move for the young defender but the two clubs appeared to be someway off on their respective valuations of the player.

The two clubs have now reportedly agreed on a deal worth around €14 million.

Newcastle will beat off a host of competition for the 23-year-old, who has previously been linked with moves to Everton and Southampton.

The player was expected to leave the club for big money this summer, thanks to a hefty €38 million release clause in his current contract. However, after a string of below-par performances late in the season, the Portuguese club are now believed to be ready to accept a lower offer.
