On this day back in 2005, Newcastle put Greek giants Olympiakos to the sword with a thumping 4-0 win at St James’ Park to secure a place in the UEFA Cup quarter-final.
It was a big night under the lights for Newcastle, who were looking to build on their 3-1 lead from the first leg in the round of 16 clash.
Olympiakos were sure to come at the Magpies but it was no issue for the hosts, who ran riot to progress into the last eight with relative ease.
Kieron Dyer opened the scoring with a superbly executed back heel to make it 1-0 to Newcastle, before Alan Shearer pounced on the rebound from Nicky Butt’s thunderous effort.
Lee Bowyer piled on the misery for the Greek side by firing home Newcastle’s third and Shearer bagged his second to seal a historic 7-1 aggregate victory.
