Goals from Mo Diame and Ayoze Perez secured all three points for Newcastle in a 2-1 win over Chris Hughton’s Brighton at the Amex Stadium.
Brighton opened the scoring in the first-half in controversial fashion and Bobby Madley was at the centre of said controversy. After Glenn Murray and Ciaran Clark took a tumble from a corner, Madley blew his whistle and all players turned believing a Newcastle free-kick had been given. However, the Seagulls were awarded a penalty instead, which Glenn Murray inevitably converted to put his side 1-0 up.
Newcastle pressed for an equaliser for the remainder of the game with little response from Brighton and they finally had their breakthrough in the 81st minute. Chistian Atsu’s shot-come-cross which cannoned off Mo Diame’s foot and into the top corner was one of the most comical goals you will see for some time.
The Magpies completed the comeback in the 89th minute as Matt Ritchie channeled his inner Jonjo Shelvey to pick out Atsu with a crossfield ball. The Ghanaian international took it down superbly, before playing a ball in to Ayoze Perez, who smashed it into the bottom left corner first time.
This win puts Newcastle back at the top of the Championship; two points clear ahead of Saturday’s trip to Huddersfield.
