Player Ratings: Brighton 1-2 Newcastle

Well, that was thrilling.

Newcastle return to the top of the Championship table thanks to a 2-1 win over Brighton at The Amex which at one point looked like a lost cause.

The hosts, who boasted the best home record in the league coming into this game, here gifted an opportunity to take the lead when referee Bobby Madley awarded the Seagulls a penalty after Ciaran Clark was adjudged to have pulled down Glenn Murray in the box – and Murray converted the spot-kick.

Newcastle battled back well despite spurning countless opportunities, noticeably those that fell to Christian Atsu and Yoan Gouffran either side of half-time.

It appeared it would be one of those days for the Toon until a mishit Atsu shot deflected off Mohamed Diame and looped into the Brighton net.

From then on Newcastle were in the ascendancy and secured all three points when Ayoze Perez tucked home a well-placed Atsu cross with just three minutes to play.

Here are our player ratings from the game.
