Newcastle United regained their spot at the top of the Championship with a 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Saturday.
Controversial striker Aleksander Mitrovic’s scored just before half-time which was enough to send Rafa Benitez’s side back to the summit in the race for promotion to the Premier League in a cagey contest.
Chances were few and far between during the game. Midfielder Jack Colback went close for the away side early on before Mitrovic had given the Magpies the lead on the stroke of half-time.
Serbian Mitrovic could’ve been considered lucky to stay on the field after raising his studs when challenging Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme after already being booked.
Wolves struggled to create many chances with Dave Edwards’ header the most notable chance in the second half.
The win gave Newcastle a two-point lead over Brighton whilst Wolves, who have improved markedly under Paul Lambert remain 18th.
The former Real Madrid boss hailed the victory, as reported by the BBC: “Every game is important to try and get three points and if we can do that the other teams have to keep on winning,
“The team is defending as a team and working very hard.”
Wolves manager Paul Lambert remarking on Mitrovic’s tackle on Ikeme said: “It is the referee’s call but I know as an ex-player when you have been yellow carded and you raise your studs you are in danger no matter what league or division you are in.”
