Matz Sels officially became Rafa Benitez’s first signing at Newcastle United this afternoon, joining Tim Krul, Rob Elliot, Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman in the goalkeeping department.
With Krul’s future uncertain the Belgian stopped looks to be a shrewd move, especially with Elliot coming back from a serious knee injury and Woodman expected to be loaned out.
The 24-year old joined Newcastle in a surprise switch following a host of Premier League clubs reportedly showing an interest. The deal represents a massive coup for the club and shows that the club still has the pulling power, especially with Rafa Benitez at the helm.
Sels was a key player in Gent’s Jupiter League winning season in 2014-15, the first league title the club had won. He also starred in Gent’s famous 1-1 draw with Lyon, saving an Alexandre Lacazette penalty to earn nine men Gent the result.
